Firefighter Gauntlet

THE RULES

The Firefighter Gauntlet is a fire-ground based competition built to be replicable for any department. Every competitor runs the same six tasks in the same order, against the clock.

Timekeeping & conduct

  • The race begins at the sound of a gunshot or verbal command from the Race Marshal.
  • Tasks must be completed in the designated order.
  • Each competitor is allowed one attempt per entry.
  • No restarts are allowed unless there is a course or equipment malfunction.
  • Task violations result in restarting the task with the race time continuing to run.

Required safety gear

Mandatory gear is provided on site; you may use your own if it meets safety standards.

  • Mandatory safety gear includes helmets, gloves, and eye protection, which are provided by the Firefighter Gauntlet.
  • Competitors may use their own gear if it meets safety standards.

Obstacle completion

Each obstacle has a clear completion requirement enforced by the Race Marshal.

Dual 5-Gallon Foam Bucket Carry

Buckets must be transported the full 50 feet without being dragged or set down past the start coupling.

Weighted Sled Pull

Pull the sled completely past the outer edge of the hose coupling.

2x4 Chop

Chop completely through a 2"x4" board, separating it into two pieces with no visible connection. Maximum of 15 full axe swings.

100' Run

Both feet must cross the next coupling before grabbing the nozzle.

100' 1¾" Hose Drag

The nozzle tip must pass the outer edge of the last coupling.

Dummy Carry

Carry the dummy under its arms and around its waist/chest. Time stops when the dummy's feet have fully passed the last coupling.

Divisions

Competitive Individual

Three age groups by gender — Youth (under 18), 18-39, 40-49, and 50+. Compete head-to-head, two lanes at a time when pairs are available.

Tandem

Open-age pairs (male, female, or mixed). The handoff between partners is only allowed after completing the 2x4 chop and before starting the 100' run.

Engine Crew

Four-person, open-age teams. Crew members may only switch upon completion of a task, all team members must complete at least one task, and physical assistance between members is not allowed.

Exhibition / Youth

Youth ages 12 and under, and any child under 18 opting into the youth course, run an exhibition entry. Open Exhibition is for entries receiving outside assistance or omitting tasks. Exhibition times are recorded but are not eligible for podium placement.
